'Back flushing' is a method often used if there is a tendency toward obstruction from the accumulation of solids at the inlet or in the first part of the channel. It consists of reversing the direction of the flow of one or both liquids or cleaning with water in the opposite direction of the normal flow. The flow rate during back flushing should preferably be higher than the normal rate of circulation in the unit for a period of 15 -30 minutes.
